Overview

In Performance reviews on Talexio, Weighting is the process of assigning a numerical value to different Competency Categories or Objectives to reflect their relative importance.

In this article, we will focus on Weighting related to Competency Categories also known as Review Criteria.

What is Weighting?

Weighting is the process of assigning a numerical value to different Competency Categories to reflect their relative importance. Not every Competency Category carries the same weight or importance. Weighting ensures that the Final Score of the performance review reflects those priorities.

When you weight Competency Categories, you ensure the total "value" of all categories adds up to 100%. When the review happens, the score for each category is multiplied by its assigned weight.

Why use Weighting?

  • Clarifies Priorities: When Competency Category weightings are shared and known to the employees, they know exactly where to funnel their energy.
  • Fairer Evaluations: It prevents an employee from getting a "perfect" score by only completing easy, low-impact tasks while failing at the most difficult, high-stakes ones.
  • Strategic Alignment: Leadership can adjust weights annually to match the company’s current goals.

Adding Competency Category Weighting

Adding Competency Category weighting in Talexio is completed in the process of creating reviews, which can be created as an ad-hoc Performance Review or as a Review Strategy.

When creating these reviews, you will select the Review Criteria to be included based on the different Competency Categories. After the Competency Categories have been selected, you will see next to the titles a box for you to include the numerical value for the weighting.

Competency Categories as shown in Review Strategies

To indicate a Competency Category is of higher weight or higher importance, the weighting value needs to be higher. A Competency Category with a weight of 3 is of higher weight or higher importance than a Competency Category with a weight of 1.

Competency Category Weighting Calculation

Upon the completion of the reviews, the manager will finalise the reviews. The final score will be based on the competency scores and Competency Category Weighting. The way this is calculated is below in order to show this as a score out of 10:

Calculation

((Competency Category #1 Score * Weighting) + (Competency Category #2 Score * Weighting) ... / (Sum Competency Category Weightings for all Competency Categories))

Example

The below review has been created with the Competency Category weightings:

With the review completed, each Competency Category was scored with the below scores:

The final score of 7/10 is achieved using the calculation above shown below:

(Action oriented Competencies Score 6 * Weighting 3 = 18) + (Approachability Competencies Score 6.75 * Weighting 1 = 6.75) + (Building effective teams Competencies Score 8.5 * Weighting 2 = 17) / (Weightings 3 + 1 + 2 = 6) = 6.95 rounded to 7/10
