Overview
In Performance reviews on Talexio, Weighting is the process of assigning a numerical value to different Competency Categories or Objectives to reflect their relative importance.
In this article, we will focus on Weighting related to Objectives.
What is Weighting?
Weighting is the process of assigning a numerical value to different Objectives to reflect their relative importance. Not every Objective carries the same weight or importance. Weighting ensures that the Final Score of the performance review reflects those priorities.
When you weight Objectives, you ensure the total "value" of all objectives adds up to 100%. When the review happens, the score for each objective is multiplied by its assigned weight.
Why use Weighting?
- Clarifies Priorities: When Objective weightings are shared and known to the employees, they know exactly where to funnel their energy.
- Fairer Evaluations: It prevents an employee from getting a "perfect" score by only completing easy, low-impact tasks while failing at the most difficult, high-stakes ones.
- Strategic Alignment: Leadership can adjust weights annually to match the company’s current goals.
Adding Objective Weighting
Adding Objective weighting in Talexio is completed in the process of creating reviews, which can be created as an ad-hoc Performance Review or as a Review Strategy.
When creating these reviews, you will select the Review Criteria to be included based on the different Competency Categories. After the Competency Categories have been selected, you will see next to the titles a box for you to include the numerical value for the weighting.
To indicate an Objective is of higher weight or higher importance, the weighting value needs to be higher. A Objective with a weight of 3 is of higher weight or higher importance than a Competency Category with a weight of 1.
Objective Weighting Calculation
Upon the completion of the reviews, the manager will finalise the reviews. The final score will be based on the Objective scores and Objective Weighting. The way this is calculated is below in order to show this as a score out of 10:
Calculation
(Sum Objectives Scores for Objectives included / Sum Objectives Weighting for all Objectives included)
Example
The below Objectives have been created with the Objective weightings:
With the review completed, each Objective to be included in the Review was scored. Due to the different types of Objective measurables, the calculations of the Objective Scores is shown below:
Objective Measurable Type |
Calculation |
Terminology Key |
|---|---|---|
| Met/Not Met | ((Current Value/Target Value) * 10) * Weighting |
Current Value/Target Value Weighting |
| Linear Scale | ((Current Value/Target Value) * 10) * Weighting |
Current Value/Target Value Weighting |
| Numeric | ((Current Value/Target Value) * 10) * Weighting |
Current Value/Target Value Weighting |
| Numeric (Reverse Targets) | ((Target Value/Current Value) * 10) * Weighting |
Target Value/Current Value Weighting |
| Based on Parent | ((Current Value/Target Value) * 10) * Weighting |
Current Value is the number of completed objectives. Target Value is the total number of objectives linked to the Parent Objective Weighting is the numerical value in the weighting field |
The final score of 3.8/10 is achieved using the calculation above shown below:
(Numerical Objective Score = 7.5) + (Linear Scale Objective Score = 15) + (Met/Not Met Objective Score = 0) / (Weightings 1 + 2 + 3 = 6) = 3.75 rounded to 3.8/10
Objective Scores are capped at 10/10, so even though it is possible in the calculation to exceed a number higher than 10, the Objective Score will never exceed 10.
